★ジョー・カストロは、日本でもリリースされたことのある『Groove Funk Soul』を含む2枚のアトランティック作品やズート・シムズの『Live At Falcon Lair』(Pablo)などで知られるピアニストですが、決して日本での知名度が高いとは言えません。とはいえ、アニタ・オデイやジューン・クリスティなどの伴奏をつとめたりもした彼のピアノには独特の味わいがあり、残された少量のレコーディングを探し求める熱心なファンも存在します。

彼は、1950年代の初めにハワイでドリス・デュークという大富豪の娘と知り合い、彼女のボーイ・フレンドのひとりとなりましたが、その後まもなく彼女が所有するいくつもの豪邸の一つでルドルフ・ヴァレンティノが元の所有者だったビヴァリー・ヒルズの“ファルコン・レア”と呼ばれる邸宅に滞在、そこをセッションができるように改装しました。多くのジャズ・ミュージシャンがそこに集まるようになり、ジョーは彼らとのセッションを録音していきました。ドリスとジョーはCloverというレーベルを設立してそれらの録音を世に出そうとしましたが、ほんのわずかな録音しかリリースできず、貴重な録音のほとんどは眠ったままになってしまいました。

今世紀に入ってカストロはそれらの録音を世に出そうとしましたが果たせず、2009年に彼が亡くなると、彼の息子ジェイムズ・カストロとリサーチャーのダニエル・リチャードが後を引き継いでついにCD6枚の未発表録音を世に出すことになりました。それがこのSunnyside盤。

ここには、チコ・ハミルトンやバディ・コレット、ズート・シムズ、ラッキー・トンプソンなどの加わったジャム・セッション、コンテ・カンドリ、フランク・ロソリーノ、アンソニー・オルテガ、ボブ・クーパー、テディ・エドワーズなど西海岸のスターたちを一堂に集めたジョー名義のビッグ・バンド・セッション、そしてジョーの代わりにテディ・ウィルソンがピアノを弾き、そこにスタン・ゲッツまで参加するという豪華なジャム・セッションが収められています。ドリスのおかげで好きなジャズに専念し、レコーディングまですることができたジョーはほんとうに幸せ者でした。
